Interview with Complexions Contemporary Ballet Intensive Program student, Shanna Irwin

We are really glad we had the chance to interview Shanna Irwin, a Complexions Contemporary Ballet Intensive Program student who won a World Dance Movement scholarship and participated in WDM Italy 2014

WDM: You won a World Dance Movement scholarship at a Complexions Contemporary Ballet Intensive Program event. What did it mean to you?

Shanna: Winning this scholarship gave me a feeling of excitement, and security knowing that I would be able to continue my professional training the next summer.

WDM: How is WDM different from other workshops you have participated in?

Shanna: A difference I noticed was that World Dance Movement is a workshop where the faculty can truly give individual attention to each student. The workshop allowed me to strengthen my personal connections with teachers who I still work with today.

WDM: Which class/es was/were your favorite at WDM Italy?

Shanna: I really enjoyed my ballet technique classes, as well as contemporary repertory, with Desmond Richardson, and Michele Olivia.

WDM: What did the experience at WDM Italy allow you to learn/achieve?

Shanna: It’s a workshop that proves the body can express what needs to be said when languages cannot be understood, and there is a lot to learn from that.

WDM: If you were to describe WDM to a dance student that was considering to join us at WDM italy 2015, what would you say?

Shanna: Definitely attend WDM Italy 2015, you will learn a lot and advance in your training because it is an atmosphere full of other focused, hard working dancers.

Siam veramente felici di aver avuto l’opportunità d’intervistare Shanna Irwin, una danzatrice del Complexions Contemporary Ballet Intensive Program che ha vinto una borsa di studio del World Dance Movement e ha partecipato al  WDM Italia 2014.

WDM: Hai vinto una borsa di studio per il World Dance Movement ad un Complexions Contemporary Ballet Intensive Program. Cosa ha significato per te?

Shanna: Vincere la borsa di studio mi ha reso estremamente felice sapendo che mi avrebbe dato la possibilità di continuare la mia preparazione professionale l’estate successiva.

WDM: In cosa il WDM si differenzia da altri stage a cui hai participato?

Shanna: Una differenza che ho notato è che il World Dance Movement è uno stage dove gli insegnanti hanno veramente la possibilità di offrire attenzione individuale ad ogni studente. Lo stage mi ha permesso di rafforzare i miei contatti personali con gli insegnanti con i quali lavoro ancora oggi.

WDM: Quali lezioni sono state le tue prferite al WDM Italia?

Shanna: Mi sono piaciute tantissimo le lezioni di danza classica e il repertorio contemporaneo con Desmond Richardson e Michele Olivia.

WDM: Cosa ti ha permesso di imparare/ottenere l’esperienza al WDM Italia?

Shanna: Il WDM conferma che il corpo può esprimere quello che c’è bisogno di dire anche quando lingue diverse non permettono la comunicazione e c’è molto da imparare da questo.

WDM:  Se dovessi descrivere il WDM ad un allievo di danza che sta pensando di participare allo stage del WDM Italia 2015 cosa gli diresti?

Shanna: Sicuramente di partecipare!  Imparerai e avanzerai tantissimo perché è un ambiente pieno di  danzatori focalizzati sul loro obbiettivo e che lavorano duramente per ottenerlo.

Interview with Luisa Valeriano, winner of the AMDA’s $40,000 Scholarship @ World Dance Movement.

We had the pleasure to interview Luisa Valeriano, one of our talented Brazilian dancers who participated in both World Dance Movement Spain and Italy 2014.

Luisa was awarded a $10,000 yearly scholarships for AMDA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Dance Theatre (4-year course – total scholarship: $40,000) at WDM Spain through an in-person audition.

WDM: In your opinion why did AMDA award the scholarship to you?

Luisa: I think I was awarded the scholarship because I am kind of different. Coming from another country I have a different mindset and culture that can add something.

Moreover, I don’t have these opportunities where I come from, so that means that I will really take everything seriously and try hard to get as much as I can from this college experience. It’s a great opportunity and I am thrilled.

WDM: How many years have you studied dance and what type of training have you done?

Luisa: I started dancing when I was about five. At the beginning I was only studying classical ballet but when I was 12 I took my first contemporary dance class.

From there I began taking all types of classes, from acrobatics to modern dance and hip-hop, but without stopping my everyday ballet and contemporary classes. I also trained at some summer courses in Australia, New York and at World Dance Movement in Spain and Italy.

WDM: How do you see the AMDA scholarship awarded at World Dance Movement Spain changing your life?

Luisa: It changed everything! I am moving from the house I lived in for my entire life to live alone in another country, that’s huge! To live somewhere that I can dedicate 24/7 to learn from the best is something I could never imagine, it’s a step closer to my dream.

WDM: How different is the dance world/industry in Brazil compared to the rest of the world?

Luisa: It’s a lot different, Brazil has a really strong and beautiful culture, and that shows in our country’s dance. During Carnival you can see huge samba parades as well as the culture from the favelas and the beautiful dancers of all genres. The problem is that Brazilians don’t have the habit to go theatres to watch dance, so it’s really hard on the industry.

We have really good dancers and companies, but not so much space to grow. Brazil’s dance industry is still under development, compared to the European or U.S.A industry where dance is part of everyday entertainment.

WDM: How was your experience at World Dance Movement Spain and Italy?

Luisa: It was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. The classes are amazing. I had never learned so much in so many different languages! The opportunity WDM gives to young dancers to learn from all these incredible teachers/choreographers from around the globe and to perform on stage is huge! Not to mention all the amazing scholarships which give the dancers even more experiences and career opportunities.

All of that while having fun! The atmosphere of the courses is so friendly; I have made friends for life and even learned some foreign words! I’m telling all my friends that everyone should go to the World Dance Movement workshops. I know I can’t get enough! Next year I’m doing it all again!

Abbiamo avuto il piacere di intervistare Luisa Valeriano, una delle bravissime ballerine brasiliane che  ha partecipato al World Dance Movement Spagna e Italia 2014.

Luisa è una delle vincitrici della Borsa di Studio di $10.000 annuli per l’università americana AMDA (Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Dance Theatre) al World Dance Movement Spagna. Valore totale della borsa di studio: $40.000)

WDM: Secondo te perchè l’AMDA ti ha scelto per la borsa di studio? 

Luisa: Penso che abbiano scelto me perché ho delle peculiarità. Venendo da un altro paese ho una mentalità ed una cultura diverse che possono aggiungere qualcosa.

Inoltre, nel mio paese non ho opportunità de genere e quindi prenderò questa occasione ancora più seriamente e mi impegnerò al massimo per imparare il più possibile. È un’opportunità straordinaria e sono felicissima.

WDM: Quanti anni hai studio danza e che tipo di formation hai ricevuto? 

Luisa: Ho iniziato a ballare quando avevo 5 anni. All’inizio studiavo solo danza classica ma verso i 12 anni ho iniziato a fare anche danza contemporanea.

Da li ho studiato ogni tipo di stile, dalla danza acrobatica alla danza moderna e hip hop ma senza mai smetere di fare danza classica. Ho anche fatto diversi corsi estivi in Australia, New York e al World Dance Movement Spagna e Italia.

WDM: Come pensi che la borsa di studio dell’AMDA ricevuta al WDM Spagna cambierà la tua vita? 

Luisa: Ha già cambia tutto! Sto andando via dalla casa in cui ho vissuto tutta la mia vita per trasferirmi in un altro paese da sola. È un grande passo! Vivere in un luogo che mi permetta di dedicarmi completamente alla mia passione e di imparare da grandi professionisti è qualcosa che non avrei mai pensato possibile. Questa opportunità mi avvicina ancora di più al mio sogno.

WDM: Quando è diverso il mondo/l’industria della danza in Brasile rispetto al resto del mondo? 

Luisa: È molto diverso. Il Brasile ha una cultura forte e bellissima e questo si riflette nel mondo della danza. Durante il Carnevale c’è la possibilità di ammirare grandissime sfilate di ballerini di samba e di ogni altro genere. Il problema è che il popolo brasiliano non è abituato ad andare al teatro per vedere uno spettacolo di danza e questo crea grandi problemi per l’industria della danza.

Abbiamo delle buonissime compagnie e ballerini pieni di talento ma non c’è molta possibilità di crescita. L’industria della danza in Brasile è ancora in via di sviluppo, rispetto all’Europa e agli Stati Uniti.

WDM: Come è stata la tua esperienza al World Dance Movement Spagna e Italia?

Luisa: È stata una delle esperienze più gratificanti della mia vita! Le lezioni sono fantastiche. Non ho mai imparato cosí tanto e in cosí tante lingue. L’opportunità offerta dal WDM di imparare da grandi insegnanti e coreografi internazionali e di esibirsi durante l’evento è enorme! Senza considerare tutte le borse di studio offerte ai danzatori per acquisire ancora più esperienza e avere opportunità di lavoro.

E tutto questo mentre ci si diverte! L’atomosfera delle lezioni è super rilassata; ho fatto amicizia con così tanti ballerini da tutto il mondo e ho anche imparato alcune parole in varie lingue straniere. Dico sempre a tutti i miei amici che devono assolutamente partecipare agli stage del World Dance Movement. Per me non è mai abbastanza e sicuramente tornerò il prossimo anno!

Let Gianni tell you how World Dance Movement turns dreams into reality.

Gianni Goffredo has been participating in  World Dance Movement – The International Workshop every summer since its very beginning in 2009. Observing his growth as a dancer as well as a person is something that makes us extremely proud!

Last year Gianni was awarded a scholarship for a 2-year Certificate Program at Peridance Capezio Center and he moved to NY. Here is a brief interview we did with him. We hope it will inspire you!

WDM: How different are you as a person and as a dancer now compared to when you first arrived in NY?

Gianni: Moving to New York is the biggest change I have ever made in my life. I’m honestly having the best time of my life right now! I am a completely different person and dancer…a better one – at least I hope!!! 🙂

The way I dance has completely changed. I come from the ballet world which is very different from what I have been experiencing here. When I first arrived in New York my ballet technique was impeccable because of all the training that I had in the past, but my contemporary technique wasn’t. I worked on it here.

I started using my face, one of the most important things I’ve learned! My expression and my movement have been growing really fast thanks to  the fantastic teachers and people who are around me. I’ve changed as a person as well because of the dancing and the experience in the Big Apple. Being overseas and seeing my family once a year have helped me grow faster and be more responsible.

WDM: How do you enjoy living in NY?

Gianni: I honestly think that New York is the best city in the world and I really think that I was meant to live here. I remember the first couple of months that I moved here I just couldn’t stop smiling. Such good vibes and energy that allow me to enjoy every single thing and moment of my life. I think I have never been happier in my life.

WDM: What is the first place you visited when you arrived in the big Apple?

Gianni: So, I arrived in NY on January 31st at night. On February 1st I had my first class at Peridance at 8.30am and after all the classes of that day (I remember it was very cold outside) I just walked for 8 hours without stoping!!! 🙂

WDM: If you had to describe WDM with 3 words what would they be?

Gianni: World Dance Movement = Magic, Energy, Family

WDM: If you had to describe WDM to another dancer what would you say?

Gianni: I tell every dancer I meet about WDM! How good and amazing this workshop is. I’ve done a lot of summer classes around Europe but I never had what I found at WDM. That’s why after all these years, I still participate with the same energy and passion I had the first year I joined this workshop. The teachers, all of them, are sensational, they all have so much experience and love. They all give and share everything they have during class. The energy of the students is so powerful. We all share tears, happiness and love. It’s difficult to describe it in words. Every year is full of so many emotions!!!

WDM: What are you doing now and what are your plans for the near future?

Gianni: At the moment I’m still in the Certificate Program at Peridance Capezio Center and I am about to start as an apprentice with Peridance Contemporary Dance Company under the direction of the one and only Igal Perry. He’s like a God for me and I will never be able to thank him enough for everything that he has done for me.

Gianni Goffredo ha partecipato al World Dance Movement – The International Workshop ogni estate dal suo esordio nel 2009. Osservare la sua crescita come persona e come ballerino è una cosa che ci rende estremamente fieri!

L’anno scorso Gianni ha vinto una borsa di studio per il Certificate Program di due anni al Peridance Capezio Center e si è trasferito a New York. Vi presentiamo una breve intervista che abbiamo avuto con lui. Speriamo possa ispirarvi!

WDM: Sei cambiato come persona e come ballerino da quando sei arrivato a NY?

Gianni: Trasferirmi a New York è stato il più grande cambiamento che abbia mai fatto. Onestamente sto vivendo il momento migliore della mia vita! Sono una persona ed un ballerino completamente diverso da quando mi sono trasferito qui….migliore, almeno spero! 🙂

Il mio modo di ballare è cambiato totalmente. Vengo dalla danza classica che è un mondo diverso da quello che ho praticato qui. Quando sono arrivato a New York la mia tecnica nella danza classica era impeccabile dato tutto l’allenamento fatto in passato, ma non era lo stesso per quella di danza contemporanea. Ci ho lavorato su qui. Ho iniziato utilizzando lil mio viso, una delle cose più importanti che ho imparato! La mia espressività ed il mio movimento sono cresciuti davvero velocemente grazie ai fantastici insegnanti e alle persone che ho avuto intorno a me.

Sono cambiato anche come persona grazie alla danza e all’esperienza nella Grande Mela. Essere dall’altra parte dell’oceano e vedere la mia famiglia solo una volta all’anno mi ha aiutato a crescere più rapidamente e ad essere più responsabile.

WDM: Ti piace vivere a NY?

Gianni: Onestamente penso che New York sia la città migliore del mondo e che io sia nato per vivere qui. Ricordo che i primi mesi che ero qui non potevo smettere di sorridere, ci sono una sorta di vibrazione ed energia nell’aria che mi hanno aiutato a godere di ogni singola cosa e momento della mia vita. Non penso di essere mai stato più felice di così!

WDM: Qual’è il primo posto che hai visitato appena arrivato nella Grande Mela?

Gianni: Allora, sono arrivato a New York la sera del 31 gennaio. L’1 febbraio ho avuto la mia prima lezione alle 8,30 del mattino al Peridance e dopo tutte le lezioni di quel giorno (ricordo che era veramente freddo fuori) mi sono messo a camminare per 8 ore di seguito senza fermarmi! 🙂

WDM: Se dovessi descrivere il WDM con 3 parole quali useresti?

Gianni: World Dance Movement = Magia, Energia, Famiglia.

WDM: Se dovessi descrivere il WDM ad un altro ballerino, cosa gli diresti?

Gianni: Parlo del WDM a tutti i ballerini che incontro! A tutti dico quanto sia bello e divertente. Ho partecipato a tantissimi corsi estivi in tutta Europa ma non ho mai trovato niente di simile! Ecco perché, dopo tutti questi anni, continuo a partecipare con la stessa energia e passione che avevo il primo anno. Gli insegnanti tutti, nessuno escluso, sono sensazionali, hanno tutti un grande baglio di esperienze e amore per la danza. Sanno dare e condividere tutto ciò che hanno durante le lezioni. L’energia dei ragazzi è così potente. Condividiamo tutti lacrime e amore. É difficile descriverlo a parole. Ogni anno è pieno di così tante emozioni!

WDM: Cosa stai facendo adesso e quali sono i tuoi piani per il prossimo futuro?

Gianni: Al momento sono ancora nel Certificate Program al Peridance Capezio Center e sto per iniziare un apprendistato con la Peridance Contemporary Dance Company sotto la direzione dell’unico e solo Igal Perry. Lui è come un dio ai miei occhi e non sarò mai in grado di ringraziarlo abbastanza per tutto quello che ha fatto per me.
